Last Christmas Janelle, my roommate, bought herself a sushi kit. And the other night I finally got to take part in some sushi fun! By the time I got home from work she had done most of the prep work: Tempura Chicken, Sliced Cucumbers & Green Onions, Fake Crab, Spicy Mayo, and a Tempeh mixture. What is tempeh you ask? Well, it’s kinda like tofu, but not. Wikipedia can explain it much better than I can. Basically it’s a soybean product that can be used in place of rice and is a great source of protein. I contributed an avocado and my cutting skills, lol. But I also made the margaritas!
We started with a couple of inside out rolls and discovered that we needed less rice and more inside stuff. We used the chicken tempura and cream cheese in one and the other had the tempeh and avocado. We also put a regular roll into the broiler with fake crab inside along with cream cheese and green onions and some of the tempeh on top. That was YUMMY! Needless to say we quickly devoured our first three rolls and quickly made more. We made similar rolls, just with more stuff inside and less rice. Although we didn’t do anymore inside out rolls, we liked our rice inside much more! And the cutting part was much easier, lol! Sushi chefs make it look so easy, but cutting through those rolls wasn’t the easiest thing I’d done, and I made sure to eat the pieces that were especially messy. I definitely want to do this again, and I’m sure Janelle and I will have the chance. Have you ever made sushi? What’s your favorite kind of roll?
